Why Being in Your Bible is Important for Christians

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life, often neglecting one of the most important aspects of Christian living: reading and understanding the Bible. Darren Mulligan, lead singer of We Are Messengers, underscores the significance of delving into the scriptures, highlighting that biblical literacy is crucial for truly knowing and walking with Jesus.

Understanding God's Heart

One of the fundamental reasons for Christians to immerse themselves in the Bible is to understand the heart of God. Mulligan describes the Bible as an “incredible love letter” that reveals God’s plan for salvation and how we should live our lives. He emphasizes that many people rely on their own ideas about Jesus rather than what the Bible actually says. This can lead to misunderstandings and a superficial faith. Mulligan states:

God has given us an incredible love letter. This story that tells us what the heart of God is and how he is going to do this incredible work of salvation in the world and in our lives.

Transformation Through the Bible

The Bible not only informs us about God’s character but also transforms us. Romans 12:2 (NIV) says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Mulligan reflects this sentiment by sharing how his joy in Jesus is rooted in the scriptures. He believes that knowing the Word leads to a transformation in how we live and love:

If we would just read it and get it into our minds and our hearts, we really would know how to walk like He walks, how to live like He lives, and how to love the way Jesus does.

Combatting Biblical Illiteracy

A major issue Mulligan points out is the level of biblical illiteracy among Christians. Many attend church for years yet lack a deep understanding of what the Bible teaches. This gap can prevent a genuine relationship with God, as they miss out on His messages and instructions for their lives. Mulligan notes:

Even Christians who have been in church for years, oftentimes they don't know much about what their Bible actually says. And therefore, they can't even really know God all that well because they're missing on what he's said to them.

The Bible Reveals the True Gospel

Mulligan also highlights the importance of understanding the full message of the Gospel. He warns against the partial truths that can make us feel good but lack depth and substance. True transformation comes from embracing the whole truth of the Gospel, which includes both God’s love and His call to repentance and holiness. He explains:

A world view says Jesus loves. A gospel view says Jesus loves, but he loves us too much to leave us this way. And that's where we're transformed by the renewing of our mind through the finished work of Christ Jesus.

The Example of Jesus

The story of the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11) is a powerful example Mulligan uses to illustrate the grace and truth of Jesus. Despite being the only one without sin, Jesus chose not to condemn the woman but rather to offer her a chance for a new life. This story not only shows Jesus’ mercy but also His call for us to live righteously:

The only one who was capable of throwing the stone was Jesus. He was the only one. And instead of giving her what she deserves under the law...Jesus instead hangs naked on a cross.

Conclusion

Engaging with the Bible is essential for Christians because it is through the scriptures that we truly come to know God, experience transformation, and understand the full message of the Gospel. As Mulligan passionately shares, the Bible is not just a book; it is the living Word of God that guides, convicts, and comforts us. By prioritizing time in the Word, Christians can grow in their faith and live lives that reflect the heart of Jesus. As Psalm 119:105 (NIV) beautifully puts it, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
