Steven Curtis Chapman’s New Father’s Day Song & More

Steven Curtis Chapman That's My Dad

Happy Friday, friends! It’s time for another edition of Fresh Music Friday! This week’s new releases features the latest from Austin French, Hillsong Worship, and Steven Curtis Chapman.

"Wake Up Sleeper" by Austin French

Austin French garnered tremendous attention with his release of high-energy songs like “Freedom Hymn” and “Born Again” over the last couple of years. He also has a great collaboration on Life 90.5 now with hip hop duo Social Club Misfits. But he recently released “Wake Up Sleeper,” pulling inspiration from Matthew 5:14:

“Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

In an Instagram announcement about the song, Austin shares, “I wrote this song to be the sound track to our life. To encourage us to share the good news, the only news that can raise dead people to life.”

"Awake My Soul" by Hillsong featuring Tasha Cobbs Leonard

The original version of “Awake My Soul” was released with Hillsong’s most recent album. However, this new version with Tasha Cobbs Leonard is a fresh collaboration worth hearing several times over. Brooke Ligertwood shares this note the origins of the collaboration:

“At the beginning of 2020, Tasha and I began talking about what it would be like for us to record a song together live at our July Hillsong Conference in Sydney, Australia, where she was an invited guest.

The COVID-19 pandemic evolved, reaching the point that necessitated postponement of live events and conferences the world over. It became clear we weren’t going to be able to execute what we’d originally planned.  However, the collaboration felt important, so perhaps there was something else we could do…And so, ‘Awake My Soul with Tasha Cobbs Leonard’ was birthed.

Though we could not have foreseen the potent timing of this collaboration, it was well within the Lord’s realm of knowledge and so we are grateful, yet not surprised!

We pray it is a blessing to you.”

"That's My Dad" by Steven Curtis Chapman

When Steven Curtis Chapman was at Port City Community Church last year in Wilmington, he spoke much of his family and talked briefly of his father, too. But this timely release gives us a deeper dive into Steven’s relationship with his dad. It’s beautiful, y’all. And that kind of relationship should be the goal of every daddy out there.
