Phil Wickham has been writing songs for the church for years. One recent Sunday morning, you might’ve sung along with “Living Hope,” “Battle Belongs” or “This Is Amazing Grace.” Now, the Dove Award winning singer-songwriter releases a new worship song to once again unite believers as they recount all the great things He has done. Together, let’s explore “This Is Our God.”
PHIL’S COMMENTS ON “THIS IS OUR GOD”
Phil’s excitement on social media regarding this song has been undeniable. Just prior to releasing the song online, he shared this note about God’s character and what He’s done:
I am eternally grateful that when we sing about the Creator of the universe, we sing about a God full of love, mercy, grace, patience and compassion. He’s not a distant being. He’s not quick to anger. He came near to save us, to pull us out of the pit and into the Hope of Heaven.

In another post, he shares what the song has meant to him personally:
I love singing this song. When I sing it, it’s like I’m preaching to my own soul to remember and respond to all that Jesus has done for us. What an incredible story we have to tell of how God’s love, grace and faithfulness intersect with our lives in such huge and profound ways. Thank you God!

PASSAGES THAT DESCRIBE OUR GOD
Following the release of this new song, Phil shared several portions of Scripture that show who our God really is. While it’s great to have biblically sound anthems to worship with, it’s vitally important that we understand God’s character straight from His Word. We’ll know more about our God and why He’s worth worshiping when we study what He says about Himself. Thankfully, Phil understands that. Below, find some of the verses he recommended to know our God better.
GOD'S CHARACTER
1 Samuel 2:2 – There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.
Hebrews 12:28-29 – Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.”
Psalm 46:1 – God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Psalm 18:30 – As for God, His way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in Him.

GOD'S POWER
Jeremiah 32:17 – Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.
Matthew 19:26 – With man this is impossible. But not with God; all things are possible with God.
GOD'S LOVE
Lamentations 3:22-23 – The Lord’s lovingkindness indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.
1 John 4:8 – Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
Ephesians 2:4-5 – But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
