God Is Not Trendy — And That’s Good News

Have you ever noticed how quickly things change? What’s trendy today is cringe tomorrow. The opinions we once assumed were permanent slowly evolve. Even some things we were absolutely convinced would last forever somehow fade with time. Living in a constantly shifting world can leave us feeling unsteady — unsure what will hold up and what will fall apart next.

And that’s exactly why the unchanging nature of God is such good news.

“Trendy” Doesn’t Age Well

Have you ever seen an old photo of yourself and wondered… why did I wear that?!

For this millennial, it was low-rise bermuda shorts. I thought they were so cool and cute. All the other girls at school were wearing them, so I begged my mom to let me get a pair at Old Navy. I happily wore them for months.

But looking back now, I see clearly what my mom was trying to save me from. Those low-rise bermuda shorts did not fit me well. In fact, they were wildly uncomplimentary. And I daresay, they didn’t really look good on anybody.

Ugh. So embarrassing.

Trends have a funny way of convincing us they’re timeless… until they aren’t. Clothes change. Hairstyles change. Slang changes. Even cultural opinions and beliefs shift over time. What was applauded a decade ago is criticized today. What was once controversial is now celebrated. The cultural ground beneath our feet can feel like sand.

But thanks be to God, our faith isn’t stitched together by trends.

Christianity Is Anchored in a Person

Christianity isn’t built on popularity, aesthetics, or hashtags. It’s anchored in a Person who declared without hesitation:

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

Jesus didn’t say He was a way that might go out of style. He didn’t claim to be a truth that would need updating. He is the way. The truth. The life.

And He has not changed.

Hebrews 13:8 reminds us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” The same Savior who calmed storms with a word is still sovereign today. The same Redeemer who forgave Peter is still forgiving sinners. The same risen King who conquered the grave still holds authority over every headline and every heart.

God’s Character Doesn’t Shift

God and the Bible are not trendy

In a world obsessed with reinvention, God remains steady.

Malachi 3:6 says, “For I the Lord do not change.” That’s not a limitation. That’s a promise. Because if God’s character shifted with cultural moods, we’d have reason to worry. If His definition of truth evolved with public opinion, we’d have no foundation to stand on.

But His holiness is still holy.
His mercy is still mercy.
His love is still steadfast.

Lamentations 3:22–23 declares, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Never ceases. Never ends. Great is His faithfulness.

Not Trendy, But Trustworthy

People may change their minds about you. Friends may drift. Leaders may disappoint. Cultural tides may turn. But God’s Word does not wobble. His promises do not expire. His character does not rebrand.

And that makes Him absolutely trustworthy.

When He says He forgives, He forgives.
When He says He is near, He is near.
When He says nothing can separate you from His love (Romans 8:38–39), He means nothing.

We don’t follow Jesus because it’s trendy. We follow Him because He is true. And unlike my low-rise bermuda shorts, we will never look back on our decision to follow Him and cringe with embarrassment.

One day, every cultural fad will fade. Every platform will quiet. Every opinion will be revealed for what it truly was. But Jesus will still be Lord.

You can rely on Him.
You can anchor your life to Him.
You can build your future on Him.

Because while everything trendy changes, our God never does.
