Christian music icon TobyMac has released a new song, and wow, is it a “good” one! It’s been a tough couple of years for the artists following not only canceled tours like everyone else, but also the tragic loss of his firstborn son. It’s difficult to imagine how a light and bright song could emerge following such unimaginable grief. However, when we’ve got a God as great as ours, maybe it’s not that tough to see. Here’s what TobyMac shared on his social media at the release of “The Goodness.”
The goodness of God is real, I am living proof…..and so grateful. Sometimes you have to be looking for it, sometimes it lands on your head. It is glimpses of light in the valley or the beauty of a mountain top view. It is joy in the morning or the hurt that turns your head. It is there if you’re looking and sometimes even when you’re not. But it is always rich, and there for all. And for it, I am grateful to my core.

Before we take a listen to the song together, let’s take a moment to reflect on the goodness of our God. That lovely aspect of God’s character means countless benefits for believers. But let’s examine a few of the lines from “The Goodness” and what it means for us today.
"EVERYWHERE THAT I GO, YOU KEEP SHOWING UP"

Have you ever felt like God’s not there? Maybe you’re going through a particularly difficult season and don’t feel anything, including His presence. But when we compare our lonely feelings to the truth of God’s word, it tells us something very different.
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
Psalm 139:7-12
Our limited, blurred vision can be further obscured in the aftermath of heartbreaking times. However, after the Lord has brought some healing to your heart, you’ll be able to look back and see the goodness of God, including how He never left you nor forsake you.

"YOU COVER ME, MY DEFENDER WHEN YOU'RE ROLLING UP YOUR SLEEVES"
Did you know that you have an enemy? Not your political opponents or neighbors who keep stealing your water hose. Whether we want to be or not, we’re engulfed in spiritual warfare against Satan. At this very moment, he’s prowling around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But if we’re clinging to Jesus, we won’t be his next meal.
But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.
2 Thessalonians 3:3
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
Psalm 91:1-2
What a relief to know that our almighty God defends us! In addition, God has given us some tools to use for defense in what’s known as the armor of God. But those tools mean nothing without the goodness of God enabling our peace, faith and salvation.

"YOU'RE THE TRUTH THAT'S GONNA SET THE CAPTIVE FREE"

In our culture today, you’ll often hear people talk about “my truth.” Certainly we have different ideas and experiences, and it’s a great thing to listen lovingly and try to find common ground with our neighbors. But the concept of “my truth” becomes problematic when it reinforces destructive behaviors and further enslaves us to our own sin. Jesus wants to give us better than a faulty subjective truth. He wants to give us THE truth that brings real freedom.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
John 14:6
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:31-32
The goodness of God is on full display in these passages. He gives us an escape from our own sin through “the only King that’s ever chose to bleed.” It’s interesting to note, however, that He didn’t actually have to. He couldn have left us in our broken, hell-bound state. But out of the goodness of His beautiful, merciful, compassionate heart, He invites us to know the Truth that sets us free still today.
