In the 1960s, people needed a revolution. It’s our prayer that a new film’s look into that movement among the hippies will be the start of another in our generation. Your Life 90.5 and several listeners gathered for opening night of the highly anticipated film Jesus Revolution. We found the film full of fun and heart-warming moments as well as plot points that challenge believers. As we discussed the movie in the days to follow among the staff and our church families, a handful of common observations emerged. You’re invited to see if our observations match your own, then tell us your thoughts about the movie.
IT SHOWS IMPERFECT PEOPLE

Jesus Revolution doesn’t sugarcoat the characters. You might have noticed a tendency in Christian filmmaking to show only the good parts of our main characters. But this film doesn’t shy away from the faults and struggles of Jesus-preaching hippie Lonnie Frisbee, traditional pastor Chuck Smith, and hippie searching for truth Greg Laurie. Just like us, none of these people are perfect. But despite their brokenness and imperfections on full display, they were powerfully used by God to bring the gospel to a lost generation.
IT DOESN’T AVOID DIFFICULT TOPICS
More often than not, you’ll find Christian films shy away from showing difficult content. In those films, any drug use typically happens off-screen and is merely referenced in character dialog. However, Jesus Revolution tackles it head-on. Not only do we witness some of the dangers of drug culture, but we also get an idea of how it feels to partake in them. Certainly such things feel great for a moment. But it’s painfully clear that the high is only temporary with no lasting benefit.
IT REVEALS SIMILARITIES TO TODAY

Lost people today might not dress in fringe jackets and bell bottoms. However, our culture today is so much like that of the hippies in the 60s and 70s. They’re looking for truth and spiritual experiences in all the wrong places. Many are wasting their lives seeking the next temporary high when only Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. Jesus alone gives freedom from sin, abundant life, and a brand new heart. And just like back then, someone needs to tell them.
