Dealing with Anxiety

3 Comforting Bible Verses for Dealing with Anxiety

The increased heart rate. The sweating. The trouble concentrating. We all know how it feels when we experience anxiety. Maybe you experience it when you have an important meeting coming up at work. Maybe when you’re worried about your best friend. Most certainly when you dropped off your baby at school for the very first time. And just as there were instances of anxiety in your past, there will also be plenty in the future.

Thankfully, we have a God who now only knows about every upcoming moment of anxiety. He also cares enough to give us instructions on how to deal with it. Together, let’s explore some bible verses for dealing with anxiety.

REMEMBER HIS PROMISES

Remember promises

“When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your comforts delight me.” – Psalm 94:19

Have your anxious thoughts ever multiplied? Do your initial worries ever grow so much, so fast that your mind is fully obsessed with the problem? Instead of slipping into a downward spiral of mental worst-case scenarios, God gives us a way out with a simple shift of perspective – think about His comforts instead.

What are His comforts? It’s all the gracious promises He gives us throughout His Word. He promises to provide for us in Matthew 5:25-33. He promises to give strength in Isaiah 40:31. He promises to guard our hearts with peace in Philippians 4:7. And there’s so many more promises and comforts to find when we dig into what He has to say to us.

SEEK OUT KIND WORDS

Kind words

“Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.” – Proverbs 12:25

The wisest king in Israel’s history most certainly dealt with moments of anxiety as he led the nation. And in his God-given wisdom, Solomon knew the power of a kind word to help. So where can you get a kind word?

  1. A Jesus-loving friend. If you’re having an anxious moment, text a friend to help cheer you up. Ask for something funny their pet did, or better yet, a photo of their fluffy mug. Ask to meet up for dinner and get some one-on-one encouragement. Most importantly, ask that they pray for you and your problem.
  2. Listen to your favorite music. Your Life 90.5 is thrilled to encourage listeners every day with the best current and classic songs. In addition to the tunes, you also get messages of hope and humor from local hosts. We hear from friends every day who say they hear exactly what they needed to brighten their mood every day.

PRAY ABOUT WHAT'S GIVING YOU ANXIETY

Pray about anxiety

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7

Anxiety isn’t something that we’re meant to carry on our own. Yes, we will experience worried times, but keeping it all on our shoulders is a sure-fire recipe for unwanted emotional exhaustion. Instead, we’re told to cast our cares on Him.

Because He loves us and cares about us, He wants us to give our concerns over to Him. In prayer, we can remove these burdens from our shoulders and lay them at the feet of Jesus. We don’t have to keep holding tight to something He is kindly offering to handle on our behalf. Let’s be honest, God is so much better at dealing with our problems than we are anyway.
